Babu Owino’s Message to Gachagua and Opposition Leaders Ahead of 2027

Embakasi East Member of Parliament Babu Owino has warned opposition leaders against internal wrangles as the country moves closer to the 2027 General Elections.

He cautioned that unnecessary divisions could weaken their chances of forming the next government, urging all opposition figures to unite and agree on one presidential candidate.

Speaking during an interview on Radio Maisha on Thursday morning, Babu emphasized the importance of teamwork and early preparations within the opposition. He noted that if leaders fail to address their differences now, it could cost them victory in 2027.

“The opposition has a strong chance of winning the next general election, but only if they stay united.

These small disagreements must stop. We need one united candidate to represent the opposition. Without unity, it will be very difficult to win,” Babu said.

The outspoken MP further called on key figures such as Kalonzo Musyoka, Eugene Wamalwa, Martha Karua, and Fred Matiang’i to hold talks and agree on a joint strategy ahead of the polls.

According to Babu, this kind of dialogue is necessary to strengthen their base and present a clear alternative to Kenyans.

“The opposition leaders should come together and reason out their differences. Kalonzo, Wamalwa, Karua, and Matiang’i must sit down and find a common ground. Only then can they stand a real chance against the ruling coalition,” he added.

During the interview, Babu Owino also criticized President William Ruto, accusing him of betraying his deputy, Rigathi Gachagua.

He alleged that the Head of State might be behind efforts to impeach Gachagua, describing it as a case of political betrayal.

Babu drew a comparison between Gachagua’s situation and his own past experiences, claiming he too has faced betrayal within his party, the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM).

“I am not convinced to support the current government. Gachagua has been betrayed by Ruto just like I was betrayed by my own party, ODM. I know how it feels to be betrayed in politics,” Babu claimed.

He went on to express his frustration with the culture of betrayal in Kenyan politics, saying it is something he personally despises.

“I hate betrayal in politics. I have gone through it several times myself, but that is not something I want to discuss today,” he remarked.

Babu’s remarks came just a day after he dismissed rumors that he had defected from ODM to join the Wiper Democratic Movement. The speculation followed his recent appearance at an event hosted by Kalonzo Musyoka, which many interpreted as a political shift.

Speaking on Radio Citizen on Wednesday, October 8, Babu clarified that his association with Kalonzo was purely personal and not political.

He explained that people were misinterpreting his interactions and unfairly labeling him as rebellious within ODM.

“My friendship with Kalonzo is personal, not political. Even if you set politics aside, what wrong has Kalonzo done? Just because I talk to him, people are already calling me a rebel. That’s not fair,” Babu explained.

The legislator also openly endorsed Kalonzo Musyoka as the best candidate to challenge President Ruto in 2027, saying his experience and perseverance make him the right choice.

He praised Kalonzo’s long history of working closely with both Mwai Kibaki and Raila Odinga, describing him as a patient and steady leader who understands the country’s needs.

“Kalonzo has proved his resilience and loyalty in politics. He worked with Kibaki and Raila, and he has always remained steadfast.

I believe he is the best person to lead the opposition and defeat Ruto in 2027,” Babu concluded.

Through his comments, Babu Owino appears to be pushing for unity within the opposition while positioning Kalonzo as a strong contender for the presidency.

His remarks also highlight growing tensions within ODM and signal renewed efforts by opposition leaders to realign ahead of the next elections.
