Ruto Calls Urgent Security Meeting Ahead of Raila’s Tragic Death, Parliament Session Suspended

President William Ruto has called an emergency meeting of the National Security Councilfollowed by a special Cabinet meeting at 2:30pm later in the day.

This decision came shortly after reports emerged announcing the death of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.

At the National Assembly, Speaker Moses Wetang’ula suspended the Wednesday morning sitting. He announced that MPs would reconvene at 2:30pm, when he would deliver an important message to the House.

“I will use my powers under Standing Order Number One to direct that this sitting be adjourned. We shall meet again at 2:30pm this afternoon, when the Speaker will issue key communication,” Wetang’ula declared.

Earlier in the morning, reports claimed that the ODM Party leader had died while taking his usual morning walk in India.

Following the news, condolence messages began circulating across social media platforms, even before the State House or ODM leadership officially confirmed the matter.

ODM Communications Director Philip Etale avoided stating anything directly, but simply posted “I am deflated”, hinting at sorrow without providing further details.

President Ruto is expected to release a formal statement on Raila Odinga’s reported death once the National Security Council concludes its sitting, which commenced a short while ago.

According to Speaker Wetang’ula’s announcement, MPs will be formally briefed about the former Prime Minister’s death during the afternoon session.

Raila Odinga had not been seen publicly for more than a month. Conflicting reports from ODM officials had circulated for weeks, until his elder brother, Siaya Senator Oburu Odinga, revealed last week that Raila was in India and was recovering.

Indian media reports indicate that Raila allegedly collapsed within the premises of an Ayurvedic treatment centre. He was reportedly rushed to a private hospital in Koothattukulam, where doctors pronounced him dead at around 9:53am Indian Standard Time on Wednesday.
