Body of Raila Odinga Arrives at JKIA to a Historic Reception
The body of the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga arrived in Nairobi this morning at 9:39am, marking an emotional and historic moment for the nation.
The remains were flown aboard Kenya Airways flight KQ 203, which was specially renamed RAO001 in honour of the veteran statesman. The aircraft touched down at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) under tight security and full military protocol.
A high-level Kenyan delegation led by Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi had earlier travelled to India to oversee the process of bringing Raila’s body back home. The casket had been draped in a Kenyan flag while still in Mumbai, India, before departure at around 3:00am on October 16, 2025.
At JKIA, the emotional reception was led by Mama Ida Odinga, President William Ruto, former President Uhuru Kenyatta, as well as close family members and national leaders. Military officers stood guard as the casket was offloaded, signalling the beginning of a state-level farewell.
Thousands Break Security to Escort Body from JKIA
At approximately 10:09am, Raila Odinga’s body began its slow departure from JKIA. What was expected to be a controlled and solemn exit turned into a massive public procession after thousands of Kenyans breached the VIP security barricades, forcing authorities to momentarily halt the movement.
Despite the chaos, the crowd remained largely peaceful, determined to escort the convoy as a show of love and respect. Witnesses described the moment as unprecedented, saying they had never seen such a spontaneous display of national unity.
The body is now being transported to Lee Funeral Home, where it will be preserved ahead of formal ceremonies. From 12 noon, Raila’s remains will be moved to Parliament Buildings for public viewing, allowing Kenyans from all walks of life to pay their final respects.
