Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) Deputy Party Leader and Vihiga Senator Godfrey Osotsi has revealed fresh details about a private meeting that former Prime Minister Raila Odinga held with senior ODM officials just moments before flying out to India.
Speaking during an interview on Citizen TV on Monday evening, Osotsi disclosed that Raila called for a closed-door meeting at the Serena Hotel in Nairobi, where several top ODM leaders gathered to discuss pressing matters concerning the party’s future.
Among the key topics discussed was the much-anticipated ODM at 20 anniversary celebration, which had initially been planned to take place in Mombasa.
According to Osotsi, those who attended the meeting included Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga, MPs Junet Mohamed and Rosa Buyu, as well as the party’s Finance Director Joshua Kawino.
The senator explained that Raila appeared healthy, energetic, and in good spirits during the discussions, even though he informed the team of his intention to travel abroad for medical checkups.
“In October this year, Raila invited us to the Serena Hotel. I was in the Senate when I received his message to join him. When I arrived, he was cheerful and full of life. We talked extensively about the party’s direction and upcoming plans,” Osotsi recounted.
He added that during the meeting, Raila openly shared his plan to visit India for medical reasons. The ODM leader then sought advice from his team on whether the ODM at 20 celebration should continue as planned or be postponed until his return.
After careful discussion, the officials agreed to postpone the event until Raila came back to Kenya.
“He told us he was doing well but wanted to travel for medical checkups,” Osotsi said. “He asked whether we should go ahead with the ODM at 20 celebrations or wait until he returned. We all agreed to postpone it until he was back.”
However, Osotsi went on to suggest that Raila might have sensed that something was not right with his health, describing his tone and words during the meeting as deeply reflective and symbolic.
He hinted that the ODM leader may have had a premonition about his death, given how he spoke about unity and the future of the party.
“I believe he somehow had a feeling about what was coming,” Osotsi remarked. “In June this year, he came up with the idea of marking ODM’s 20th anniversary. He wanted the celebration to be grand — a three-day event — where he planned to invite every politician who had ever been part of the ODM family, including President William Ruto.”
The senator further revealed that before leaving for India, Raila made a heartfelt appeal to his party members, urging them to remain united and continue strengthening the ODM movement ahead of the 2027 general elections.
“Before he left, he asked us to make sure ODM remains strong and to bring in more supporters as we prepare for the future,” Osotsi said.
His remarks come amid growing reports of internal tension within ODM, with some members allegedly taking different political directions as new alliances and realignments begin to take shape across the country.
Despite these divisions, Osotsi emphasized that Raila’s last meeting showed his unwavering commitment to the party’s legacy and his desire to see ODM continue to stand firm as a major political force in Kenya.
