DCI Arrests TikToker Over Claims of Assassination Plot Targeting Popular Nairobi MP
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has arrested a popular TikTok content creator who allegedly claimed that he was offered Ksh3.5 million to assassinate a well-known Member of Parliament (MP) from Nairobi.
In a statement released on Friday evening, the DCI confirmed the arrest, explaining that the suspect was apprehended for allegedly spreading false information through his TikTok account.
Detectives revealed that the man was tracked down and arrested in Malindi, Kilifi County, after an intense investigation into his claims.
He is currently being held in police custody as officers finalize preparations to charge him in court.
The arrest came just days after a controversial video posted by the TikToker on October 20 went viral. In the video, he alleged that a top government official had approached him with a Ksh3.5 million offer to assassinate a sitting MP.
The DCI, while addressing the matter, emphasized that spreading unverified or false information online is a serious offense that can cause public tension and confusion.
“In a viral video posted on October 20, 2025, the outspoken TikToker claimed he had been promised Ksh3.5 million to eliminate a prominent leader,” the DCI stated.
“He was arrested for allegedly publishing misleading and false information on his TikTok page.”
In the controversial clip, the content creator went further to allege that the supposed assassination plan was linked to the death of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga. He claimed the motive behind the alleged plot was to prevent the targeted MP from rising to become the new spokesperson for a section of Kenyans following Raila’s demise.
However, in the same video, the TikToker insisted that he had turned down the alleged offer. He warned Kenyans that such a plot, if real, could destabilize the country and called for tighter security measures for the affected lawmaker.
His statement quickly gained traction online, with thousands of Kenyans reacting with shock and concern.
A few days later, after the video drew national attention and public debate, the TikToker released another clip retracting his claims.
In the follow-up video, he stated that the previous video was not true and that he had only created it for “content creation” purposes.
Despite his attempt to clarify the matter, his initial claims had already sparked heated conversations across social media platforms.
So far, both the government and the MP mentioned in the viral video have not issued any official statements regarding the allegations.
Interestingly, during the funeral of Raila Odinga, the same MP had publicly voiced fears about an alleged plan to attack him, though he stopped short of naming those he believed were behind the threats.
This incident adds to the growing number of cases where social media influencers and content creators have found themselves in trouble with authorities over the kind of content they post online.
In July, businessman and fellow TikToker Kan Maiyo was arrested for publishing a video that allegedly incited members of the public against police officers.
The latest arrest also comes amid the enforcement of the Computer Misuse and Cybercrime (Amendment) Bill, 2024, which gives authorities greater powers to monitor and act against the spread of false or harmful online content.
The controversial law aims to regulate digital platforms more strictly, ensuring that online spaces are not used to spread misinformation or create panic among citizens.
The DCI has since urged Kenyans, especially social media users, to act responsibly when sharing information online, warning that those found spreading false statements or endangering public order will face serious legal consequences.
