Breaking: Former LSK President Nelson Havi Dumps Ruto’s UDA Party

Former LSK President Nelson Havi Quits Ruto’s UDA Party

Former Law Society of Kenya (LSK) President Nelson Havi has officially announced his resignation from President William Ruto’s United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party.

In a formal letter dated November 7, 2025, addressed to the UDA Secretary General and copied to the Registrar of Political Parties, Havi stated that he was leaving the party in line with the Political Parties Act. The outspoken lawyer noted that his resignation would take effect immediately.

“I hereby give notice of resignation as a member of the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) effective today, in accordance with Section 14 of The Political Parties Act, Cap 7D of the Laws of Kenya.

Please notify the Registrar of Political Parties of my resignation to facilitate the removal of my name from the party’s membership register,” he wrote.

Nelson Havi, who joined UDA in 2021, had announced his intention to contest for the Westlands parliamentary seat in the 2022 general elections under the party’s ticket.

He was warmly received into the party by then Deputy President William Ruto, who was also a presidential candidate at the time.

However, despite a spirited campaign, Havi lost the Westlands MP seat to the incumbent, Tim Wanyonyi of the ODM party.

Havi did not disclose his reasons for quitting UDA, sparking widespread speculation among political observers and supporters.

Some believe his move could be linked to shifting political alliances ahead of the 2027 elections, while others see it as part of a larger plan to reconnect with his former political base.

Interestingly, Havi’s exit comes at a time when Tim Wanyonyi, the current Westlands MP, is expected to bow out of the parliamentary race to vie for the Bungoma gubernatorial seat in 2027.

Wanyonyi, who has represented Westlands since 2013, recently confirmed his intention to shift focus to county politics.

Following this development, Havi hinted at a possible political comeback, revealing that residents of Westlands had urged him to return to active politics. “I have listened to the People of Westlands.

The unanimity of their views is that I can serve them once again in the National Assembly following the decision by Tim Wanyonyi to run for Governor of Bungoma County,” Havi had earlier shared.

He further explained that his initial decision to contest in 2022 was driven by overwhelming public demand. However, this time, he claims the people have set one clear condition for their support—he must resign from UDA and return to ODM.

“The People of Westlands have made one request — that I leave UDA and rejoin ODM. I have been in ODM before, and my departure then was due to my opposition to the dismemberment of the Constitution through the BBI initiative,” Havi stated.

He added that he is ready to honor the wishes of his constituents, saying, “I am more than happy to accede to the demands of the People of Westlands, for the People are sovereign.”

Havi’s resignation from UDA is expected to stir political discussions, particularly in Nairobi’s Westlands constituency, as the region prepares for a heated 2027 parliamentary contest.

His potential reunion with ODM could significantly reshape the political dynamics in the area, especially with Wanyonyi’s exit creating an open race.
