Oburu Odinga has called on members of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) to remain vigilant and protect the party from being “swallowed” by President William Ruto’s United Democratic Alliance (UDA).

Speaking in Siaya County, the Siaya Senator stressed that although ODM is currently part of the broad-based government arrangement initiated by Raila Odinga, that cooperation should not be mistaken for blind support for Ruto’s re-election in 2027.

According to Oburu, the late Raila Odinga left ODM as a strong political movement, and it is the duty of its members to preserve that legacy.

He reminded them that ODM’s decision to engage with the government was strategic and meant to benefit its supporters, not to merge with the ruling party.

He warned that allowing ODM to lose its independence would erase Raila’s political achievements and weaken opposition politics in the country.

Oburu made it clear that ODM’s relationship with the Kenya Kwanza government will depend on how it treats the party and its supporters. He said that if ODM is respected and its agenda is supported, the party could consider cooperation beyond 2027.

However, if the government fails to honour its promises or sidelines ODM leaders, then the party will look for new political partners ahead of the elections.

He further stated that ODM’s participation in the broad-based government should continue “as Raila wanted,” up to 2027, but emphasized that this does not mean automatic support for President Ruto’s re-election.

Oburu’s message appeared to echo concerns from other ODM leaders, such as Siaya Governor James Orengo, who have also cautioned against the ruling party’s attempts to absorb ODM and weaken its influence.

The Senator urged party members to stay united and focus on strengthening ODM at the grassroots level. He said the party must remain a powerful political force capable of influencing national decisions and defending the interests of its supporters.

He reminded members that ODM had been built through years of struggle and sacrifice, and its independence should never be compromised for short-term political gains.

Oburu’s remarks come at a time when ODM is navigating internal debates on whether to continue supporting the government or reposition itself ahead of 2027.

His warning highlights growing tensions within the party over its future direction and the need to safeguard Raila Odinga’s political legacy.
