Kenyan Activist Bob Njagi Speaks Out After Being Held in Uganda’s ‘Fridge’ Detention
Kenyan activist Bob Njagi, who was detained together with Nicholas Oyoo in Uganda for 38 days, has finally opened up about their harrowing experience and the mysterious “fridge” where they were allegedly held.
While addressing journalists on Wednesday, Njagi revealed that the so-called “fridge,” which President Yoweri Museveni himself acknowledged, was located at a Special Forces Command Centre in Uganda.
According to Njagi, this was one of several secret detention facilities where hundreds of Ugandans have reportedly been held without any formal charges or trials.
Njagi described what happened to them as a serious crime against humanity, claiming that the secret detentions were being conducted under the authority of General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, who is both the Chief of Defence Forces of the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) and President Museveni’s son.
He suggested that Museveni himself might not have known the full extent of what was taking place, saying that the operations at the detention centre were being carried out by a powerful team that answered only to Muhoozi.
“These operations are being done at the Special Forces Command Centre in Sarakasenyi, which is the training ground for the Presidential Security Unit. They call themselves Next To None because they don’t take orders from the Judiciary, Parliament, or even the Executive,” Njagi explained.
Njagi went on to describe the group as an armed militia working directly under General Muhoozi’s command. He said he saw over 150 Ugandans still being held when he left, many of whom had been detained for months or even up to a year without ever appearing before a court.
“That’s what they refer to as the fridge,” Njagi added, highlighting the horrifying conditions in which detainees were kept.
President Museveni’s Admission
Shortly after the release of Njagi and Oyoo, President Museveni publicly admitted that the two Kenyans had indeed been detained by Ugandan security forces — and even confirmed that they were kept in a ‘fridge’ for several days.
In a Saturday night interview with UBC, Museveni defended the arrest, saying Uganda’s intelligence services had detected and captured the two during a rally organized by opposition leader Robert Kyagulanyi, popularly known as Bobi Wine.
“Of course, with our very good intelligence, we picked them up and they have been in the fridge for some days,” Museveni stated confidently. “Some Kenyan leaders called me and asked that I either charge them here or hand them over to Kenya.”
Museveni also claimed that Njagi and Oyoo had been working closely with Bobi Wine’s group and described them as “experts in riots.”
“We arrested two Kenyans — I do not recall their names — but they were working with Kyagulanyi’s people and are experts in organizing riots,” he said.
38 Days in Captivity
Njagi and Oyoo were finally released on the night of Friday, November 7, and handed over to Kenyan authorities at the Busia border. Their release came 38 days after their abduction on October 1.
During the time they were missing, both the Ugandan police and military repeatedly denied holding them. However, multiple witnesses reported seeing them being taken away by armed security officers at a petrol station near Kampala.
Njagi’s revelations have now shed more light on the mysterious “fridge” that President Museveni mentioned, raising new concerns about human rights abuses, illegal detentions, and the growing power of Uganda’s elite military units.
He emphasized that the ordeal was not just about him and Oyoo but about hundreds of innocent Ugandans who continue to be silenced, detained, or tortured without justice.
“The world needs to know what is happening in Uganda. People are being held like animals — in cold, dark rooms — for simply speaking their minds,” Njagi said.
His statement has reignited public debate on the state of democracy and freedom of expression in Uganda, with calls for international human rights organizations to investigate the allegations and pressure the Ugandan government for accountability.
