KRA to Auction Cars and Other Goods
The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) has issued a 30-day warning to individuals and businesses to collect their goods stored at various Container Freight Stations (CFSs) in Mombasa, including luxury and high-end vehicles.
In a government gazette notice dated November 28, KRA’s Customs Enforcement Manager, Gakii Ruthiaren, emphasized that any goods not collected within 30 days will be considered abandoned. Once deemed abandoned, the items will be disposed of, primarily through public auctions.
The authority confirmed that the auctions will take place online between January 5 and January 9, 2025. Interested buyers are invited to inspect the goods at designated locations on December 29 and December 30, 2025, during standard office hours.
According to the notice, “Pursuant to the provisions of section 42 of the East African Community Customs Management Act, 2004, as amended (EACCMA, 2004), notice is hereby given that unless the goods listed below are entered and removed from the custody of the Customs Warehouse keeper at the Container Freight Stations in Mombasa within thirty (30) days of this notice, they will be deemed abandoned and disposed of.”
The items up for auction include a wide range of vehicles, such as Lexus, Nissan Note, Daihatsu Mira, Mitsubishi, Mazda, Toyota, Subaru, Peugeot, Toyota Land Cruiser Prado, Volkswagen Tiguan, Honda, Isuzu, and Mercedes-Benz.
In addition to vehicles, other goods stored at these facilities include bags of used clothing, shoes, household items, drinks imported from the European Union, pallets and wall slats, oil and gas tools and equipment, bathroom accessories, among many others.
These items were all originally intended for import into Kenya and have been held in warehouses including Awanad, Consolbase, Autoport, Interpel, Mitchell Cotts-MCF, and African Line, as per KRA.
This announcement comes just two weeks after KRA issued a similar 30-day notice to importers whose goods remain uncollected at the Inland Container Depot and bonded facilities in Nairobi.
These items will also be disposed of through public auctions scheduled from January 5 to January 9, 2026, on KRA’s official auctioning portal.
Some of the items set for auction from Nairobi include solar water heating systems, handbags, shoes, raw sugar, filter cigarettes, and furniture. Vehicles up for sale include notable models such as Jeep Wrangler and Mercedes-Benz.
KRA continues to urge importers and owners to promptly clear their goods to avoid losing them permanently.
The auctions provide an opportunity for the public to acquire a variety of goods, from household items to high-value vehicles, at potentially competitive prices.
