Breaking: Ruto Departs for U.S. at Donald Trump’s Invitation

President William Ruto has left Kenya for yet another major diplomatic mission, this time heading to Washington, D.C., in the United States.

His trip was confirmed on Tuesday, December 2, by State House spokesperson Hussein Mohammed, who announced that President Ruto was travelling at the official invitation of U.S. President Donald Trump.

According to the statement, Ruto will be among the key leaders witnessing the historic signing of the DRC–Rwanda Peace Agreement — a deal that many observers say could become one of the most important breakthroughs in ending long-standing instability in Eastern Democratic Republic of Congo.

The signing ceremony will bring together Rwandan President Paul Kagame and DRC President Félix Tshisekedi, the two central leaders involved in the peace pact.

Their agreement is expected to build on years of difficult negotiations, including the Nairobi and Luanda peace processes as well as joint efforts by the East African Community (EAC) and the Southern African Development Community (SADC).

State House described the agreement as a major step forward in addressing decades of violence in Eastern DRC.

The peace deal is designed to support disarmament and the reintegration of armed groups, open up humanitarian access to communities affected by conflict, and create a stronger foundation for long-term stability across the East and Central African region.

Kenya has been deeply involved in regional peace initiatives, with President Ruto’s administration playing a significant role in mediating dialogue and supporting diplomatic efforts through both EAC and SADC channels.

The Washington trip is therefore seen not only as a diplomatic duty but also as recognition of Kenya’s contribution to regional stability.

While in the United States, President Ruto is also expected to advance several strategic national interests beyond the peace agenda. His itinerary includes engagements focused on trade, investment, health partnerships, and security cooperation.

A key highlight of the visit will be the signing of the Kenya–U.S. Health Cooperation Framework. This new framework will transform a 25-year health partnership into a more sustainable, government-driven model aimed at strengthening Kenya’s progress toward Universal Health Coverage.

Overall, the trip is being viewed as an important moment for Kenya’s diplomacy — combining regional peace efforts, global partnerships, and the pursuit of long-term development goals.
