Veteran Radio Presenter Dies Shortly After Mourning a Friend
Veteran radio presenter Festus Amimo, who served as the Head of Radio Mayienga at the Kenya Broadcasting Corporation (KBC), has passed away.
The station confirmed his death in a statement released on Sunday, December 7, leaving colleagues and listeners in deep shock.
Amimo, known across the country for his strong, authoritative voice and warm, engaging presence on air, died unexpectedly just a few hours after he had shared a heartfelt message on social media mourning the death of a close friend.
His sudden passing has added even more pain to a weekend that had already been emotional for him and those around him.
The experienced journalist hosted the well-known Mayienga FM morning show Gari Mokinyi, a program that many listeners considered part of their daily routine.
His work earned him a reputation as one of the most dedicated and passionate broadcasters in the Luo-language media space.
In their official statement, Mayienga FM described his death as a huge blow to the station and the wider media community. The station said they were deeply hurt by the loss of a man who had committed his life to serving audiences with professionalism and genuine passion.
“It is with profound shock, deep sorrow and heavy hearts that we announce the untimely passing of our head of station, Festus Amimo,” the team wrote, reflecting the pain shared by many who worked closely with him.
Tributes quickly followed from friends, colleagues, and family members who praised Amimo’s humility, kindness, and strong character. Interior PS Raymond Omollo also shared a touching condolence message, saying he was shocked and saddened by the news.
He described Amimo as a warm, dependable individual whose presence positively impacted everyone around him.
Several radio stations, especially those that broadcast in Dholuo, also joined in mourning the late journalist.
Radio Namlolwe shared a heartfelt message on social media, saying their officials and journalists were deeply saddened by the sudden loss and offered their condolences to the Mayienga FM family.
Just two days before his passing, on Friday, December 5, Amimo had taken to social media to mourn the death of his friend Rose Yier. “We have this evening lost a friend, Rose Yier. RIP,” he posted—a message that now adds a heartbreaking layer to his own sudden departure.
Beyond his work at KBC, Amimo also served as the Chair of the Luo Journalists Association, where he played a major role in supporting and guiding young journalists. Many credited him with helping shape the next generation of Luo-speaking media professionals.
As of now, the station has not yet released information about the cause of his death, leaving many with questions and a deep sense of loss. His passing marks the end of a remarkable career and leaves a gap in the media industry that will be felt for a long time.
