Gachagua Outlines Plan to Reduce Ruto’s Influence in Nairobi Politics
Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) leader Rigathi Gachagua has offered a clearer picture of the opposition’s new and ambitious strategy to take control of Nairobi’s key elective seats in the next general election.
According to Gachagua, the opposition is crafting a coordinated plan meant to weaken the Kenya Kwanza government’s political dominance in the capital.
Speaking on Sunday, December 7, at Christ Dominion Ministries in Kasarani, Gachagua dismissed earlier rumours claiming there was an internal power struggle within the opposition camp over who should control Nairobi.
He stressed that the coalition remained united and that the partners were focused on strengthening each other rather than competing from within.
Gachagua explained that the opposition has agreed to support specific parties in areas where they are already popular. He acknowledged that in Nairobi, some partners have a stronger political history than his newly formed DCP.
He pointed out that Wiper Party has long enjoyed a solid reputation and has previously worked closely with ODM, making it a valuable ally in the city’s politics.
“In Nairobi, Wiper has built a strong name. They have always helped ODM. We cannot afford to fight among ourselves. Where Wiper is stronger, we will support them.
Where DCP is stronger, we will ask Wiper to return the favour,” Gachagua said, indicating a more coordinated approach.
He went on to praise Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka, describing him as a trustworthy leader who would play a central role in shaping the opposition’s Nairobi strategy.
Gachagua noted that the coalition wants Nairobi’s leadership to reflect the diversity of Kenya and insisted that ODM must also remain part of the broader opposition plan.
“We want Nairobi to show the true face of Kenya, and we cannot leave ODM behind. We are relying on Kalonzo to guide the planning for Nairobi because he has the experience needed. That will be his responsibility,” he added.
Gachagua’s remarks come after earlier reports claimed that his party had negotiated to take full control of Nairobi’s major political seats—including governor and senator positions—in 2027. However, both Kalonzo and Gachagua have now dismissed those claims as misinformation.
The former Deputy President also issued an open invitation to ODM members who feel uncomfortable in their current political environment, urging them to work with the opposition instead of siding with the ruling coalition.
“We are not sidelining ODM. But if ODM joins UDA, they will lose their identity. They don’t need to sit next to me; they can support Kalonzo, and he will support them in return. What we want is a democratic and inclusive Nairobi,” he said.
On the issue of the opposition’s 2027 presidential candidate, Gachagua emphasized that there were no divisions within the coalition.
He explained that discussions were still ongoing and that the team would soon unveil a strong flag-bearer capable of challenging President William Ruto in the upcoming elections.
This renewed political positioning indicates a growing effort within the opposition to solidify unity, avoid internal rivalry, and present a powerful front in Nairobi—one of Kenya’s most politically influential regions.
