Ruto’s Lawyer Named Among 15 Shortlisted for Court of Appeal Judge Roles
The Judicial Service Commission (JSC) has officially published the names of 15 candidates who have been shortlisted for appointment as Judges of the Court of Appeal, drawing attention from the legal community and the wider public due to the prominence of some of the nominees.
One of the most notable names on the list is Joseph Katwa Kigen, a respected Senior Counsel who has built a strong reputation in Kenya’s legal circles. Kigen is widely known for representing President William Ruto in several high-profile and sensitive legal cases, a role that has placed him firmly in the national spotlight.
His nomination is seen as recognition of his long-standing experience, legal expertise, and influence within the profession.
Also shortlisted is Ahmed Issack Hassan, a well-known public figure with extensive experience in governance and electoral matters. Hassan previously served as the Chairperson of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC), where he oversaw key national elections.
He is currently the Chairperson of the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA), a role that involves promoting accountability and professionalism within the National Police Service. His inclusion reflects his deep background in public service, law, and institutional leadership.
The release of the shortlist marks an important step in the process of strengthening the Court of Appeal, which plays a crucial role in interpreting the law and shaping judicial precedent in Kenya.
The nominees are expected to undergo further evaluation, including interviews and integrity checks, before the final appointments are made. The outcome of this process will significantly influence the future composition and direction of the appellate judiciary.
