Nairobi – The Kenya Power and Lighting Company (KPLC) has announced planned electricity interruptions that will affect several areas across the country on Tuesday, January 27.
According to the utility firm, the outages are part of routine system maintenance aimed at improving power supply and ensuring reliable service to customers.
In a notice published on its official website, Kenya Power said the planned maintenance works will be carried out in at least 12 counties, with electricity expected to be switched off for several hours in the affected areas. The company advised residents and businesses to make necessary arrangements during the interruption period.
“The listed areas will be under planned power maintenance tomorrow (27th January 2026). Customers are advised to check the most recent schedule for updates,” Kenya Power stated.
Among the counties set to be affected are Nairobi, Kisumu, Kakamega, Kiambu, Meru, Embu, Laikipia, Kirinyaga, Uasin Gishu, Migori, Homa Bay, and Murang’a.
Areas to Experience Power Outages
1. Nairobi County (9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.)
Parts of Ngong, Kawangware, and Kibera will be affected. Other areas include Riara Road, Bamboo Lane, Wanyee Road, Nyakinywa Road, Talanta Stadium, War Memorial Cemetery, Githembe, the Meteorological Department, Midhill Hospital, Suna Estate, Junction Mall, Ngando, Dagoretti Corner, Gitanga Road, Rusinga School, Braeburn School, Tea Board of Kenya, Miotoni Road, Lenana School, Racecourse, Jockey Club, Jamhuri Park, Rowland Camp, Ayany, Showground, National Beekeeping Centre, Santack Estate, Gikuyu Close, and surrounding customers.
2. Uasin Gishu County
- Kaptatembu and Ngenyileel (9:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m.): Kapkatembu, Kapkenyeloi, Kapchesukunwo, Soin Primary School, and nearby areas.
- Railway Hotel, Premium Hotel, and Maili Nne (10:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.): Baharini, Kamagut, Railways Hotel, and adjacent customers.
3. Kisumu County (9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.)
Areas around Farm Machinery, Grand Royal Swiss Hotel, Bukna, Bance Park, Kapko, Kiboswa, and Safaricom Booster stations will experience power cuts.
4. Kakamega County (9:00 a.m. – 5:30 p.m.)
Residents of Malava, Samisi, Malanga, Malava Market, Malava Hospital, Malichi, Kimangeti Tumbeni, Kakoyi, Kambi Kwanza, Shamberere, West Kenya Sugar, Mahira, Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS), and Kambiri will be affected.
5. Migori County (9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.)
Power interruptions will hit Ranen, Debe, Kokuro, Dede, Nyakuru, Kanyimach, Maroo, Omware, and surrounding areas.
6. Homa Bay County
- Pala Area (9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.): Pala, Nyakongo, Pala Prison, Ngeta, Oyuma, Ongalo, Osika, Kanyakutu, Sombro, Aros, Nyangwete, Jonyo, Chula, and Sanda.
- Nyatoto Area (9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.): Nyatoto, Ongayo, Nyabera, Kona Koito, and nearby customers.
7. Murang’a County (9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.)
Parts of the Tana Feeder and Ndithini Mission Spur, including Busiani Primary, Kiatineni Market, Kiatineni Primary, Ndovuini Primary, Tana Ranch Market and Primary School, will be affected.
8. Meru County (8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.)
Areas such as Gakoromone, Giaki, Kwa Ng’ombe, Shauri Yako, Kiambogo Coffee Factory, Mulanthakari Market, Thuura Coffee Factory, Kauthene Market, Nkoobo, Munithu Primary, Giaki Market, Nthamiri Market, Ciothirai Police Station, and surrounding villages will experience outages.
9. Embu County (9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.)
Power cuts will affect Masinga, Kaewa, Kitangani, Mutwamwaki, including Masinga Market, Kengen Camps, Mukusu, Katulye, Kaewa, Kisuni, Ulutya, Kwasuvu, and adjacent areas.
10. Kirinyaga County (9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.)
Areas including Githigiriri Prison, NIB, Mwariko, KPL Offices, Kiriwasco, King’ati, Mikimaini Borehole, and nearby residents will be affected.
11. Laikipia County (9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.)
Electricity interruptions will affect Katheri, Kangaita, Ontulili, Kwa Marete, and surrounding areas.
12. Kiambu County (9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.)
Affected areas include Gikambura, Lusigetti, Kiriti, Nachu, Mawathaine, Thindigua, Fourways Estate, Kiangombe, Athena, Kimuchu Primary and Secondary Schools, and nearby businesses and homes.
High Power-Consuming Appliances
In a related update, Kenya Power has also advised consumers on household appliances that use large amounts of electricity. According to the company’s commercial manager, Richard Wida, appliances that generate heat tend to consume the most power.
These include electric showers, which can use up to 5,000 watts, microwaves that consume around 2,000 watts, and electric irons, which typically use about 1,000 watts. The utility encouraged customers to use such appliances sparingly to help manage electricity bills.
