A U.S.-based Kenyan pastor has publicly announced his resignation from his leadership role at the Jesus Compassion Ministry (JCM) U.S. branch following the church’s decision to invite President William Ruto to one of its events in Kenya.
Pastor Charles Wachira made the announcement on Sunday morning, February 22, stating that he would no longer serve in his position at the church.
He explained that his resignation was motivated by the need to uphold spiritual leadership rooted in truth, righteousness, and the protection of innocent life.
In his statement, Wachira expressed deep concern over what he described as troubling leadership decisions and recent public engagements that, in his view, have caused discomfort among believers, particularly the younger Generation Z.
He emphasized that the church must remain sensitive to the struggles and suffering of its members, warning that leadership actions that create confusion, division, or moral unease demand a principled response.
“Spiritual leadership, according to Pastor Charles Wachira, must always be anchored in truth, righteousness, and the defense of innocent life,” the statement read.
“When actions by leaders lead to confusion, division, or moral discomfort among believers, it becomes essential to take a firm and principled stand,” he added.
The pastor also addressed growing demands for justice, accountability, and moral clarity, especially among young church members, amid Kenya’s current delicate national climate.
He pointed to biblical teachings that caution against calling evil good and stress the importance of standing up for the oppressed.
According to Wachira, spiritual leaders carry the responsibility of speaking on behalf of those who cannot speak for themselves.
He clarified that his decision to resign was guided by conviction rather than rebellion, and promised to provide further details about his resignation in the future.
Wachira’s resignation follows the church’s invitation to President William Ruto to attend its third-anniversary celebrations at the headquarters in Ruiru, Kiambu County.
This invitation sparked a backlash on social media, with some church members even threatening to boycott the event.
The Jesus Compassion Ministry (JCM), led by Bishop Ben Kiengei, has grown significantly since its founding.
It currently has 64 branches, including international locations in the United Kingdom, Canada, Germany, South Africa, and the U.S., where Pastor Wachira was overseeing operations.
Despite the controversy, President Ruto attended the Sunday service at the Ruiru church, alongside other leaders, as the church continues to navigate the differing opinions and reactions among its members.
