How Self-Employed Kenyans Can Check Their SHA Payment Amount
The Social Health Authority (SHA) has provided guidelines for self-employed Kenyans to determine their required monthly payments through a process known as means testing.
What is Means Testing?
Means testing is an assessment method used to evaluate the financial status of households, particularly those without a regular income.
This process takes into account various socio-economic factors, including access to essential services, the composition of the household, and living conditions.
On February 5, Health Director-General Patrick Amoth addressed the media, explaining that many Kenyans were being denied healthcare services due to skipping this crucial step.
Dr. Amoth highlighted that one of the major challenges faced by the government was the inability to accurately determine the financial status of unemployed individuals who had not provided the necessary data.
He emphasized that, on average, means testing determines a premium payment of KSh 592 per month.
“One of the biggest challenges we are facing is that many people who register for SHA do not complete the entire process, including means testing,” Amoth stated.
“So far, only 3.1 million Kenyans have completed means testing. This means that many others are unable to qualify for services under the Social Health Insurance Fund (SHIF).
As a result, they are unable to access essential healthcare, including primary healthcare services and emergency medical treatment.”
Who Needs to Complete Means Testing?
Employed Kenyans are not required to undergo means testing since their SHA contributions are automatically deducted from their salaries. Currently, employees contribute a base amount of KSh 300, plus an additional 2.75% of their monthly salary towards SHA.
However, for self-employed individuals and those without a fixed income, means testing is essential to determine the exact amount they should contribute.
Why Early Registration and Means Testing are Important
The SHA has urged Kenyans to complete their registration and means testing in advance, rather than waiting until they need medical attention. Delays in completing the process could result in difficulties accessing healthcare services when needed.
For those who may struggle with the online process, the government has encouraged them to seek help from community health promoters who can guide them through the steps.
How to Complete Means Testing for SHA Payments
If you are self-employed and need to determine your SHA contribution, follow these steps:
- Visit the SHA Portal – Go to afyayangu.go.ke and log in using your details.
- Access Your Profile – Once logged in, navigate to the “My Profile” section.
- Select the Income Tab – Click on the “Income” tab to proceed.
- Answer the Required Questions – Provide accurate responses to the financial assessment questions to help determine your contribution amount.
- Review the Results – The system will automatically calculate and display the amount you need to pay to SHA, either monthly or annually.
By completing this process, self-employed Kenyans can ensure they are eligible for healthcare coverage under SHA, avoiding complications when seeking medical services.
