Embakasi East MP Babu Owino has strongly hinted that he could run for president in the 2027 general elections, positioning himself as the ideal candidate to challenge and unseat President William Ruto.
Speaking to the media on Saturday, April 19, Babu boldly stated that he is more than qualified for the top job and believes he is the only Kenyan capable of defeating Ruto.
During his remarks, Babu expressed unwavering confidence, even joking that he would beat President Ruto a day before the election—playing off a common Kenyan saying that describes winning “early in the morning.”
“We are currently overqualified to defeat the President of the Republic of Kenya,” Babu declared. “Only Babu Owino can beat William Ruto squarely—actually, I can win the race a day before the election itself. Forget about that old saying of winning early in the morning.”
He went on to say that he is not only qualified to be president but also has what it takes to lead Nairobi as governor or continue serving as an MP.
However, Babu emphasized that leadership is not just about getting elected—it’s about genuinely working for the people.
“I am more than qualified to serve as Nairobi governor, or continue as a Member of Parliament. But for me, what matters most is service to the people,” he said. “Leadership isn’t just about elections; it’s about what you do for the citizens once you are elected.”
Babu pointed to his deep connection with ordinary Kenyans as one of his biggest strengths. He shared that having gone through many of the same struggles and hardships that most Kenyans face gives him a strong understanding of their needs.
According to him, this makes him uniquely equipped to lead and serve effectively.
“I have been through so many of the challenges that common citizens face,” he said. “That’s what qualifies me to lead them. In any position I choose to run for in 2027, my leadership will be guided by God, and my mission will be to serve the people.”
The vocal legislator also took time to urge young people—especially Gen Zs and millennials—to rise up and get involved in the next general election. He explained that everyone who casts a vote is already a politician because voting is part of a political process.
“Everyone who votes in this country is a politician,” Babu explained. “Casting a ballot is a political action. The difference is that some people get elected and genuinely lead, while others just become corrupt dealers who damage the country.”
He emphasized the importance of youth involvement, pointing out that Gen Zs and millennials make up the majority of Kenya’s population and therefore hold the power to change the country’s future.
“I want to encourage the youth—especially Gen Zs and millennials—to fully participate in the 2027 elections,” he said. “They make up nearly 65 to 70 percent of the population, which means they have the numbers to elect a president, governors, MCAs, and more.”
Babu concluded by urging young people not only to vote but also to step up and seek leadership positions themselves.
“Don’t just vote—run for office. Step forward and be the change. This country can be led by one of you,” he said.
His remarks come at a time when divisions are emerging within the ODM party, fueling speculation about new political alliances and ambitions as the 2027 elections draw closer.
