7 Chinese Nationals Jailed in Kenya for Illegal Mining Activities
Seven Chinese nationals have been sentenced to seven years in prison in Kenya for engaging in illegal mining operations.
The group was convicted at the Kapenguria Law Courts for conducting unauthorized mining activities along the Wei-Wei River, located in Sigor, Pokot Central Sub-County.
The individuals – Wang Youping, Xian Zhenming, He Zhouming, Wang Xiaodong, Zhao Zhenwei, Guan Qiang, and Deng Chun – were arrested on February 12, 2025.
Their arrest followed a joint operation led by the Mining Investigations Unit in collaboration with officials from the Ministry of Mining, Blue Economy, and Maritime Affairs.
During the operation, the authorities uncovered an active mining site that was operating without the necessary licenses. They seized several pieces of equipment and vehicles that were being used in the illegal mining process.
According to a statement from the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP), it was confirmed that none of the accused individuals had valid mining permits.
Moreover, two of the accused, Xian Zhenming and Deng Chun, were found to be in the country without the proper work permits or alien registration documents. Mineral samples collected from the site tested positive for quartz, further proving the mining activities.
When the suspects appeared before Principal Magistrate Nelly Kenei last Thursday, all seven pleaded guilty to the charges.
As a result, each of them was fined Ksh3 million for illegal mining and an additional Ksh400,000 for working without valid permits. In default of paying the fines, they will serve one year in prison for each offence.
Additionally, Xian Zhenming and Deng Chun were fined Ksh200,000 each for being unlawfully present in Kenya. If they fail to pay the fine, they will serve an extra six months in prison.
All sentences will be served consecutively, meaning the total jail time for each individual will be longer. After serving their sentences, the seven will be deported back to China.
This crackdown is part of a broader effort by Kenyan authorities to combat illegal activities carried out by foreign nationals.
The government has recently intensified its surveillance and enforcement operations targeting unlicensed foreign operations within the country.
In a separate but related case, four individuals – two Belgians, one Vietnamese, and one Kenyan – pleaded guilty to charges of illegally possessing and trading live queen ants.
The Belgians were caught on April 5, 2025, at a guesthouse in the Lake View area of Naivasha, Nakuru County.
They were found in possession of approximately 5,000 live queen ants stored in 2,244 tubes, with a total estimated black market value of around Ksh1 million.
The two foreigners were arraigned at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport Law Courts and are also facing legal consequences as the country tightens its grip on unlawful environmental and wildlife trade.
These recent developments highlight Kenya’s commitment to protecting its natural resources and ensuring that all foreign activities within its borders comply with the law.
