Governor Wanga Urges Peace After Deputy Governor Survives Assassination Attempt
Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga has strongly urged residents of her county to reject violence and instead embrace peace, unity, and the rule of law.
Her message came just hours after a disturbing incident in which her deputy, Oyugi Magwanga, narrowly escaped what is believed to be an attempted assassination.
In a statement released on Monday evening, Governor Wanga expressed deep concern about the attack and emphasized the urgent need for thorough investigations by security agencies. She called for immediate action to identify and arrest those behind the incident.
“I am extremely disturbed by the news of an incident involving my deputy governor, Hon. Oyugi Magwanga, that occurred last evening,” Wanga stated.
“Any event that threatens the safety and security of our leaders must not be taken lightly. It calls for serious attention and quick intervention from the relevant authorities.”
The governor went on to urge the police and other security organs to carry out a swift, fair, and transparent investigation. She stressed that justice must be served without delay.
“I strongly appeal to our security teams to act promptly and impartially to investigate this incident and ensure that those responsible are apprehended and prosecuted.
At the same time, I appeal to the people of Homa Bay to stay calm, remain united, and avoid any actions that could lead to further tension,” she added.
Governor Wanga did not hide her concern about the rising threats against leaders, especially considering that the attack came shortly after the tragic killing of Kasipul Member of Parliament, Charles Were.
Were was shot and killed by unknown attackers along Ngong Road near the City Mortuary roundabout, and the country is still mourning his death.
The attempted assassination of Deputy Governor Magwanga occurred on the evening of Sunday, May 11. According to reports, unknown individuals opened fire on a vehicle believed to belong to Magwanga as it approached the entrance to his homestead. Fortunately, he was not inside the car at the time of the attack.
Speaking to the media on Monday morning, Magwanga confirmed the incident and shared his account of how the events unfolded. He revealed that he had been tipped off that some people were trailing him as he was heading home.
“While on my way home, I received information that I was being followed,” Magwanga said. “I had to make a quick decision and change my route. I decided to use the Gamba road and approach my home from a different direction.”
The deputy governor added that he had already alerted his household to prepare for his arrival and asked them to keep the gate open. His security team was also ready to receive him.
“As I approached my home, my security team noticed the suspects and immediately responded by opening fire at them,” he explained. “Thankfully, I was safe and managed to avoid walking into what could have been a deadly ambush.”
Magwanga reassured the public that he is not afraid and that he will not be intimidated by individuals who are targeting him.
“I urge Kenyans to remain calm,” he said. “I will not be shaken or silenced by those trying to harm me. My work for the people of Homa Bay will continue.”
The incident has sparked fear among residents and leaders alike, with many now calling for increased protection for elected officials and a thorough investigation to ensure such attacks do not continue.
