How to Own a Home Through the Affordable Housing Programme

The Kenyan government has announced new updates on how citizens can become homeowners through the Affordable Housing Programme.

According to Government Spokesperson Isaac Mwaura, those who have saved for a longer period under the program and those with larger families will be given priority when the houses are ready for allocation.

Speaking in a statement on Tuesday, May 13, Mwaura assured the public that the entire allocation process will be open and transparent.

He emphasized that the government is committed to making sure the process is simple, fair, and accessible to all eligible Kenyans.

How the Allocation Will Work

Mwaura explained that once a housing project is completed, the government will begin by informing all individuals who have registered for the Affordable Housing Programme.

These individuals will be notified when the homes are ready and will be guided on the next steps.

“The process is fair and straightforward,” said Mwaura. “We will begin by notifying registered members once the houses are ready for occupation.

Allocation will then be done based on several important factors: how long someone has been saving, the size of their family, and how many people have applied for houses in that specific category.”

He went on to explain that this approach ensures fairness and gives more chances to those who have shown long-term commitment to the program and those who have greater family needs.

One Kenyan, One Home Policy

To make sure as many Kenyans as possible get to benefit, the government is enforcing a strict rule of one Kenyan, one home.

This means that each individual is only allowed to acquire one housing unit under the Affordable Housing Programme.

This rule is designed to prevent hoarding and ensure that more deserving citizens have a chance to own a home.

How to Register and Increase Your Chances

Kenyans who want to own a home through this initiative are strongly encouraged to register on the official Boma Yangu platform.

Once registered, participants should start saving consistently and follow up on updates regarding ongoing and upcoming housing projects.

The earlier you register and start saving, the better your chances of being allocated a house once construction is completed.

“Those who have registered will receive notifications and will be asked to choose a unit,” Mwaura said. “After choosing, they will be informed of the amount they need to have saved to qualify for ownership.”

He added that allocation decisions will continue to be based on key criteria—savings history, family situation, and demand in each housing category. “And let’s not forget,” he emphasized, “the program strictly follows the rule of one Kenyan, one home.”

Available Units and Economic Impact

Mwaura also revealed that a total of 4,888 housing units are now up for sale and available for qualified Kenyans to apply for.

This effort is part of the government’s broader development plan known as the Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA), led by the Kenya Kwanza administration.

Since its launch in September 2022, the Affordable Housing Programme has created over 25,000 direct and indirect jobs across the country, offering economic opportunities while addressing Kenya’s urgent housing shortage.

“This initiative is not just about providing homes,” said Mwaura. “It is also a key pillar in transforming the economy and creating employment opportunities for our people.

We urge Kenyans to take advantage of this transformative programme and secure a decent home for their families.”

In conclusion, if you are looking to own a home affordably in Kenya, now is the time to register on Boma Yangu, begin saving, and stay informed.

The Affordable Housing Programme promises not just shelter, but a new beginning for thousands of Kenyan families.
