Siaya Leaders Address Declining Ruto’s State House Invitation

Leaders from Siaya County have denied reports that they deliberately turned down an invitation to State House by President William Ruto.

Speaking to journalists on Tuesday, May 13, the Siaya Members of the County Assembly (MCAs) explained that the meeting was not rejected but postponed due to the absence of Governor James Orengo, who is currently out of the country.

Richard Otieno, the Majority Leader in the County Assembly, clarified that the meeting with President Ruto was initially scheduled for Wednesday, May 14.

However, the leaders decided to push it to the following week to allow the governor, who is abroad, to attend.

Otieno emphasized that they wanted the engagement with the President to be attended by all key leaders from the county. He explained, “Some of our county’s senior officials were still away, and we wanted this to be a fully representative and inclusive meeting. That’s why we chose to wait for the rest to return before proceeding.”

His statement was supported by other MCAs, who confirmed that they are ready and willing to meet the Head of State once Governor Orengo is back in Kenya.

Central Gem MCA Madingu revealed that the invitation was officially communicated to them on Monday, May 12. It was sent through Siaya County Senator, Dr. Oburu Odinga, who shared the invitation with the MCAs on behalf of State House.

“The initial communication about the planned meeting with President Ruto was received by top county leaders, who then passed the message to us,” said North Ugenya MCA Benard Adala.

Madingu further added, “We were told about the State House meeting just yesterday. When we asked for more details, we learned that the invitation came to us through our Senator, Dr. Oburu Odinga.”

Apart from addressing the State House invitation, the MCAs also took the opportunity to clear the air regarding rumours of an alleged plan to impeach Governor James Orengo.

Responding to the matter, Madingu strongly dismissed claims that any motion had been tabled in the County Assembly to remove Governor Orengo from office.

“These rumours that MCAs are planning to impeach the governor are baseless. What has Governor Orengo done that would warrant an impeachment?” Madingu posed.

Orengo, a long-time ally of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, has recently come under public scrutiny due to his firm opposition to Raila’s ongoing political collaboration with President Ruto.

His strong stance on the matter has led to increased speculation and political pressure.

The MCAs urged the public to ignore the false narratives being spread on social media and emphasized their commitment to unity and development for the people of Siaya County.
