The Nairobi County Government has issued a directive for the immediate closure of all Naivas Supermarket outlets within the city.

This drastic action comes after the discovery that the popular retail chain has allegedly been selling expired goods to unsuspecting customers.

The Nairobi County Health Committee announced the closure on Wednesday, May 14, after conducting an inspection at one of the outlets located on Moi Avenue.

During the visit, the committee reported finding expired items still being displayed on the shelves, which they said poses a serious health risk to city residents.

“We are currently at the Naivas branch on Moi Avenue, and we have discovered expired products being sold. This puts the health of Nairobi residents in danger,” said a representative from the health committee.

In addition to expired goods, the committee also raised concerns over the staff members handling the products. According to their findings, the workers had not undergone proper health checks, which further heightened the risk to consumers.

“Moreover, the individuals responsible for handling these products have not been medically tested. As a result, the committee has agreed that all Naivas branches across Nairobi should be shut down immediately. This will give room for proper testing and inspections,” the committee added.

Naivas Supermarket, which is one of the largest retail chains in Kenya, operates more than 30 branches within Nairobi County.

These branches are spread out in various areas, including Kilimani, Lavington, Westlands, Lang’ata, Buruburu, and Kasarani.

The county government has emphasized that the closures will remain in place until all health and safety concerns have been addressed, and the supermarket chain is able to prove it is in full compliance with public health standards.
