Kirinyaga County is in mourning following the death of its first Deputy Governor, Julius Muthike Njiri. He was a key figure in the county’s political history, serving from 2013 to 2017 during the first term of Kenya’s devolved system of government. Njiri worked alongside the then-Governor, Joseph Ndathi, under the TNA party ticket.
Governor Anne Waiguru confirmed his death on Tuesday evening. In her tribute, she described Njiri as a leader committed to public service, knowledge, and enterprise.
She extended her heartfelt condolences to his family, colleagues, and the many people whose lives he touched.
“Kirinyaga has lost one of its founding county leaders, Hon. Julius Muthike Njiri, who served as our first Deputy Governor.
He stood for service, knowledge, and enterprise. My condolences to his family, colleagues, and the people whose lives he touched,” Waiguru stated.
Njiri’s time in office was marked by both service and controversy. While he played an important role in shaping the county’s early governance, his relationship with Governor Ndathi was rocky.
By 2016, he had openly complained about being sidelined, saying he had gone for months without official duties.
He also alleged that his allowances for fuel and transport had been withheld and that he lacked an official car, a benefit he argued was provided for under the constitution.
The disagreements grew so tense that Njiri declared he would never work with Governor Ndathi again, accusing him of mistreatment and neglect.
Despite the political setbacks, Njiri continued to focus on education and personal development after leaving office. He went on to pursue advanced studies in business and leadership. In 2011, he completed a Global Executive MBA at the United States International University (USIU). Later in 2018, he attained a Global MBA from the same institution.
His academic journey did not stop there; in 2022, he earned a PhD in Business Administration from Miramar California University. Earlier in his career, in 2008, he had graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Education from the University of Nairobi.
His commitment to learning highlighted his belief in growth and knowledge, even after his political career. Many who knew him say his educational achievements were a reflection of his determination and resilience.
The cause of his death has not yet been made public, and the family is expected to release details about his passing and the funeral arrangements in due course.
