Ogolla explained that in 1998 he had submitted his resignation letter after deciding to leave the military. However, Leshan spoke to him for three hours and saw potential in Ogolla, telling him that he could one day rise to become the Airforce Commander. Leshan’s words and vision that Ogolla could achieve more in the military if he stayed convinced Ogolla to withdraw his resignation.
Almost 20 years later, Ogolla’s promotion to Airforce Commander fulfilled Leshan’s prediction. Ogolla fondly recalled driving to meet Leshan after his promotion to thank him for his wisdom and for correctly envisioning Ogolla’s future career path. They spoke for another three hours as Leshan was glad that Ogolla had listened to his advice.
Tragically, General Ogolla passed away on April 18, 2022 when the Kenya Air Force helicopter he was traveling in crashed in Kaben, Elgeyo Marakwet county. He was accompanying other high-ranking military officials on a working visit to inspect security operations and school renovations in the volatile north rift region.
Nine other military personnel also lost their lives in the crash, while two occupants survived. The incident came as a shock due to Ogolla’s high standing. In his honour, President William Ruto declared three days of national mourning.
Ogolla was laid to rest on April 21 in Ng’iya, Siaya County according to his last wishes. In keeping with Luo traditions, he was buried without a coffin, simply wrapped in cloth. Speaking at the burial, Ruto pledged a thorough investigation into the chopper crash tragedy.
The recently unveiled video provides fascinating insights into Ogolla’s early career struggles and pivotal decision to remain in the military. It reveals Leshan’s remarkable foresight in identifying Ogolla’s leadership potential and subsequently convincing him not to resign, a choice that shaped Ogolla’s destiny to ultimately lead the military as CDF.
