Police Arrest Seven Over Chaos at Gachagua’s Church Event
The National Police Service (NPS) has confirmed the arrest of seven people connected to the chaos that broke out near a church in Kariobangi North on Sunday, November 30, during a service attended by former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, December 2, the police said the seven suspects were arrested in the Lucky Summer area of Nairobi and are now awaiting arraignment in court.
Authorities added that they are continuing to examine more images from the incident in an effort to identify and apprehend other individuals responsible for the disruption.
“The National Police Service confirms the arrest of seven suspects linked to the disturbances at Kariobangi North PCEA Church on Sunday, 30th November,” the statement read. “All seven were arrested in Lucky Summer and are being processed for court appearance.
Additional arrests are expected following the completion of our investigations, including analysis of photographs and audio recordings from the scene,” the statement added.
The chaos unfolded on Sunday afternoon outside the church when a group of youths, allegedly sponsored to disrupt the service, clashed with another group believed to be supporters of Gachagua.
Gachagua had visited the church to lead a thanksgiving service celebrating Democracy for the Citizens Party’s (DCP) Wanyoike Warui, who won the Kariobangi North ward seat in the by-elections held on November 27.
As tensions escalated, police moved in to disperse the two groups, who had blocked the main road leading to the church. In an effort to restore order, officers fired teargas canisters and gunshots into the air. The confrontation temporarily disrupted the church service.
According to the police, six people were injured during the chaos. NPS emphasized that the incident appeared to have been planned and orchestrated in advance.
NPS spokesperson Muchiri Nyaga also dismissed reports claiming that the police had fired teargas inside the church premises.
The police are appealing to members of the public who witnessed the incident to come forward and assist with the ongoing investigation by contacting the service through official communication channels.
