A motorist involved in assaulting a traffic police officer in Mirema during a traffic stop on Sunday has been arrested.
Ian Njoroge, a resident of the Jacaranda area in Kayole, Nairobi, was apprehended at his home on Sunday evening in a coordinated operation spearheaded by the Nairobi area Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI).
The police report indicates that the motorist was flagged down around 8 a.m. on Sunday after allegedly obstructing Mirema Drive, prompting the intervention of law enforcement officers.
“A police officer stationed at Mirema Junction along Kamiti Road, tasked with traffic control duties, noticed a motor vehicle attempting a U-turn on the road, resulting in obstruction to other road users. As he approached the vehicle in question, the driver veered and collided with the roadside edge, becoming immobilized,” reads part of the police report.
During the stop, a traffic police officer entered the vehicle and, as detailed in the report, instructed the driver to proceed to the Kasarani Police Station.
Officers probing the incident reveal that the motorist brandished a sword from beneath the seat while driving in the vicinity of the Quickmatt supermarket on Kamiti Road.
Fearing for his safety, the police officer reportedly leaped out of the vehicle and ran away, while the motorist, sporting a red basketball jersey paired with jeans and trainers, pursued closely behind.
At the Kasarani police station, authorities documented the harrowing event, revealing that the injured traffic police officer was undergoing treatment for the wounds inflicted during the assault, according to sources familiar with the matter.
In the footage, an unknown individual is seen striking the police officer with a powerful blow before delivering a soccer-style kick to his face.
As he tried to assault the officer once more, bystanders rushed to intervene. The video documents his subsequent escape from the scene.
Amidst the chaos, the motorist purportedly absconded with a police pocket phone battery, which remains unaccounted for.
The injured police officer sought medical assistance initially at Crestview Mother and Child Wellness Centre in Kasarani before being referred to Mama Lucy Hospital for additional treatment.
