Muturi’s Easter Post Sparks Controversy Online

Muturi’s Easter Message Poster Triggers Backlash Online

Former Cabinet Secretary Justin Muturi likely didn’t expect backlash when he posted an Easter greeting on Friday, April 18, through his X (formerly Twitter) account.

But what was meant to be a simple Easter message quickly turned into a trending topic for all the wrong reasons.

Kenyans online, known for their sharp eye and blunt opinions, were quick to criticize the design of the poster. The graphic featured Muturi appearing to rise from the clouds, with a large cross next to him.

Below this cloudy image, his Easter message was displayed in small text, almost as an afterthought.

Many netizens felt that the poster sent an entirely wrong impression. Instead of spreading Easter cheer, several users said it looked more like an obituary or a mourning tribute.

A large number of online users expressed confusion and concern, even offering condolences, as if the post were announcing Muturi’s passing. Several urged him to reconsider whoever was behind the design and communications, saying it gave off the wrong tone entirely.

One user commented, “I had to read the post several times to understand it. At first glance, I honestly thought this was an obituary or bad news, or that this was a fake account.”

Another remarked, “Whoever designed this and approved it should be off the payroll by now. That team seriously failed.”

Amid the criticism, some people tried to give constructive feedback. One user recommended that future designs should include brighter, cheerful colors such as light yellow or gold.

They explained that clouds often symbolize mourning or sadness and should be avoided in celebratory messages.

Instead, they suggested using flowers, sunny imagery, and a bold “Happy Easter” headline in warm, festive colors to better capture the spirit of the occasion.

Besides the graphic, another issue sparked criticism — the use of Kenya’s Coat of Arms in the poster. Some Kenyans pointed out that Muturi is no longer a government official and questioned the legality or appropriateness of him using national symbols in personal posts.

Muturi was recently fired from his role as the Public Service Cabinet Secretary by President William Ruto.

He was replaced by Geoffrey Ruku, the former Mbeere North MP, who officially took over the position on Thursday, April 17.

Since his dismissal, Muturi has become increasingly vocal about the shortcomings of the Kenya Kwanza government. He has also taken a public stance against President Ruto, accusing him of various forms of mismanagement.

One of Muturi’s most explosive allegations was that President Ruto tried to pressure him into signing a questionable deal worth Ksh129 billion (around $1 billion) with Russian investors.

The money was allegedly meant to support the government’s tree-planting campaign, which aims to plant 15 billion trees across the country.

Muturi claimed that the President attempted to coerce him into approving the deal while he was at the airport, without giving him any time to properly read or understand the contract.

He stood his ground and refused to sign, later criticizing the entire proposal as suspicious.

He didn’t mince words in his criticism of the Head of State, stating that Ruto’s presidency is “the most unfortunate thing that could have happened to Kenya.”

From a controversial poster to heavy political accusations, Muturi’s recent actions have made headlines — and sparked plenty of debate among Kenyans both online and offline.
