A man accused of causing a disturbance during a photo session involving Treasury Cabinet Secretary Njuguna Ndung’u faced charges in a Nairobi court on Friday.
Eric Mankuyu was charged alongside Julius Kamau who did not enter a plea.
According to the charges, Mankuyu and others not present in court allegedly created a disturbance likely to breach the peace by shouting and attempting to disrupt the photo session at the Treasury Building on Harambee Avenue on June 13.
Standing before Milimani senior principal magistrate Benard Ochoi, Mankuyu denied the charges and requested lenient bond terms. He was granted a cash bail of Sh10,000 and is scheduled to return to court on June 26 for a case mention.
However, Julius Kamau, Mankuyu’s co-accused, faced a different set of circumstances. Kamau, who did not plead to the charges, was ordered to undergo a mental assessment after repeatedly shouting in court, accusing the government of oppressing the poor.
The court orderly had to calm him as he continued to issue insults during the proceedings. Magistrate Ochoi directed that a report on Kamau’s mental fitness be presented in court next Tuesday, at which time he is expected to enter a plea.
During a photo session involving the Budget team led by CS Njuguna Ndung’u, Mankuyu allegedly attempted to disrupt the event. Witnesses reported that Mankuyu, dressed in black and holding an unidentified object, was seen ascending the stairs towards the Treasury Building before police officers intervened and escorted him away.
The Treasury CS and his team, undeterred by the disruption, continued with their duties, underscoring the importance of maintaining order and respect for official functions.
The case will be mentioned on June 16.
