In a dramatic and unexpected turn of events, Didmus Barasa, a well-known Kenyan politician, found himself at the receiving end of Gen Z’s wrath after he supported the controversial Finance Bill 2024. Barasa, who has built a reputation as a vocal and often polarizing figure, was attending a public meeting in his constituency when a group of young people started expressing their dissatisfaction. They accused him of betraying their trust by voting in favor of a bill that they believe would increase the financial burden on ordinary citizens. The atmosphere quickly turned hostile, with some in the crowd likening Barasa to a “burukenge,” a Swahili term for a lizard, symbolizing treachery and deceit.

The incident highlights the growing political awareness and assertiveness among Kenya’s younger generation. Unlike previous generations, Gen Z is more connected, informed, and vocal about their opinions. They are using social media platforms to organize, mobilize, and hold their leaders accountable. The reception Barasa received is indicative of a broader trend where young people are increasingly challenging the status quo and demanding more transparency and accountability from their elected officials.

Barasa’s support for the Finance Bill 2024, which has been widely criticized for its potential to exacerbate economic inequalities, seems to have been the tipping point. The bill proposes various measures that could lead to increased taxes and reduced subsidies, disproportionately affecting the youth and low-income families. As a result, many young people feel that their future is being compromised for the sake of political and economic agendas that do not represent their interests.

The backlash against Barasa is not an isolated incident but part of a larger movement of political activism among Kenyan youth. This demographic is increasingly disillusioned with traditional politics and is demanding a new kind of leadership that prioritizes their needs and aspirations. The incident serves as a wake-up call for politicians who have traditionally relied on rhetoric rather than action. It underscores the need for them to engage more meaningfully with the youth, address their concerns, and involve them in the decision-making process.

In the wake of this event, political analysts are closely watching how Barasa and his peers will respond. Will they dismiss the youth’s concerns as mere noise, or will they recognize the power and influence of this growing constituency? As the political landscape in Kenya continues to evolve, one thing is clear: the voice of Gen Z cannot be ignored.
