Dr. Austin Omondi released following his alleged abduction on Sunday, June 23, 2024.
The Kenya Medical Practitioners Pharmacists Dentists Union (KMPDU) confirmed his release and condemned the government’s actions in a strongly worded statement on social media.
In a tweet posted late today, KMPDU expressed their relief and outrage:
“Our colleague @ @Dr_AustinOmondi has been released. We condemn in the strongest terms possible the impunity of this government. The threats, intimidations, and the act of fear mongering cannot work.”
Dr. Omondi’s release comes after intense pressure from various professional organizations and a stern ultimatum issued by KMPDU demanding his immediate and unconditional release.
The union, which represents over 10,000 medical professionals, had warned that it would shut down all public and private medical services if Dr. Omondi was not safely returned by midnight.
Dr. Omondi, also known as Japrado, was reportedly abducted while leading a blood donation effort to support injured protestors.
His disappearance sparked an outcry from various quarters, including the Law Society of Kenya (LSK) and the Kenya Dental Association (KDA), who demanded his safe return and expressed deep concern for his well-being.
