The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) has issued a plea for witnesses to come forward with any information that could assist in the investigation of the fatal shooting of Rex Kanyike Masai, 29, during anti-Finance Bill protests on June 20.
Masai tragically lost his life when gunfire erupted during demonstrations in Nairobi.
In a statement posted on their official channels, IPOA urged the public to provide witness accounts to help bring closure to Masai’s family and friends, emphasizing the importance of accountability in policing.
“IPOA appeals for witness accounts for anyone who may have witnessed the fatal shooting of Rex Masai to advance its investigations,” the statement read.
Those with information were encouraged to call toll-free at 1559 or 0204906000.
The incident occurred around 7 pm along Moi Avenue, where a group of protesters had gathered, chanting slogans against the Finance Bill. An aerial video captured the moment when Masai was shot, reportedly in the leg, causing him to fall to the ground in distress.
Witnesses at the scene rushed to aid Masai, who was subsequently transported to Bliss Hospital Moi Avenue for urgent medical attention. Despite efforts to save him, hospital officials confirmed Masai’s tragic death upon arrival.
