Former Wiper MP Ditches Kalonzo for Ruto

Former Wiper MP Rashid Kassim Amin Defects to President Ruto’s UDA Party

Former Wajir East Member of Parliament Rashid Kassim Amin has officially ditched the Wiper Democratic Movement (WDM-K) led by Kalonzo Musyoka and joined President William Ruto’s United Democratic Alliance (UDA).

Amin was formally received into the UDA family on Saturday, October 25, by the party’s Secretary General, Hassan Omar Hassan, during a welcoming event held at the party’s headquarters along Ngong Road in Nairobi.

Speaking after his defection, Amin explained that his decision to leave the Wiper party was driven by a desire to align himself with a government that is making a real difference in the lives of Kenyans, particularly the people of Wajir.

He said it would be unreasonable for him to oppose a government that is actively delivering development projects and improving the welfare of citizens in his region.

The former MP emphasized that his move followed deep reflection and wide consultations with religious leaders, elders, and supporters from his constituency.

He made it clear that his decision was not about political opportunism or personal gain, but rather about promoting meaningful partnerships, sustainable development, and public service.

“I took time to think deeply about this decision and consulted widely with respected leaders and my supporters. This move is about ensuring that the people of Wajir and the entire Northern Kenya region are fully part of President Ruto’s transformation agenda,” Amin stated.

He further expressed his commitment to ensuring that residents from Wajir and the larger Northern Kenya region are not left behind in the country’s development journey.

Amin added that working with the current administration provides a better platform to address long-standing challenges in areas such as infrastructure, education, and water access.

Amin’s defection comes just weeks after another Wiper legislator, Charles Ngusya Nguna, the MP for Mwingi West, also joined the UDA. Nguna made his move on October 10, 2025, during a visit to State House, Nairobi.

During a meeting with leaders from the Lower Eastern region, President William Ruto praised Nguna for what he described as a courageous and visionary decision. The President commended him for choosing development and collaboration over partisan politics.

“I particularly want to thank Mwingi West MP Charles Ngusya Nguna for his brave decision to join our team and work with us in driving development in his constituency,” Ruto said.

Following his defection, Nguna called on residents of Mwingi West to prepare for a series of development activities and presidential visits in the coming weeks.

“Tighten your belts! The next two weeks will be very busy with President William Ruto’s engagements and projects in our region,” Nguna told his supporters.

The latest political realignments highlight President Ruto’s growing influence in regions that were previously dominated by opposition parties.

As more leaders from Kalonzo’s Wiper party continue to cross over to UDA, political analysts believe this could signal shifting alliances ahead of future elections.
