Protests have erupted in Migori and Eldoret Town over the contentious Finance Bill 2024, igniting widespread discontent among residents and business owners. Demonstrators took to the streets early this morning, voicing their strong opposition to the proposed legislation, which they claim will impose heavy tax burdens and exacerbate the cost of living. The bill, which includes new levies on essential goods and services, has been criticized for disproportionately affecting the lower-income population, fueling the anger seen in today’s protests.

In Migori, hundreds of protesters gathered at the town center, holding placards and chanting slogans against the Finance Bill. The atmosphere was tense as riot police were deployed to manage the crowds and prevent any escalation of violence. Local leaders and activists addressed the crowd, urging the government to reconsider the bill and listen to the grievances of the common citizens. Traffic was disrupted as demonstrators blocked major roads, leading to significant delays and inconvenience for commuters.

Eldoret Town witnessed a similar scene, with large crowds assembling near the county headquarters. The protesters, including a mix of students, workers, and local politicians, marched through the town in a show of solidarity against the proposed financial reforms. The road to the State House became a focal point of the demonstration, symbolizing the direct challenge to the national leadership’s policies. Clashes with police were reported as authorities tried to disperse the crowds using tear gas and water cannons, resulting in several injuries.

The protests reflect growing unrest and dissatisfaction with the government’s economic policies. Critics argue that the Finance Bill 2024, while intended to boost revenue and address fiscal deficits, fails to account for the economic hardships faced by ordinary citizens. They call for a more equitable approach that does not unduly burden the vulnerable sections of society. As the situation develops, the government faces mounting pressure to engage with the protesters and find a viable solution to avoid further unrest and instability.
