The Law Society of Kenya (LSK) President Faith Odhiambo has sounded the alarm over yet another abduction case in the wake of increased police kidnappings linked to protests against the controversial Finance Bill 2024.
Odhiambo revealed that Peter Nyamweya Oginga was forcibly taken on Wednesday evening at around 9:30 p.m. in Juja.
“We are demanding his immediate release! No more abductions!!!” Odhiambo declared on her X account shortly after the incident.
Drawing comparisons to the authoritarian regime of former President Daniel Moi, Odhiambo expressed deep concern over the resurgence of such practices.
“This is shocking! I feel like we are going back to the Moi era; the last we heard of abductions and torture chambers. Our country is singing about freedom and democracy, but these abductions are a grim reminder of a darker past. While some abducted individuals have been released, others remain unaccounted for,” she said.
Odhiambo also called for the immediate release of detained protesters and demanded accountability from law enforcement authorities. She emphasized the need for swift action to address the human rights violations and urged the government to uphold the rule of law.
In recent weeks, several individuals who vocally opposed the unpopular Finance Bill 2024 on social media have been abducted and detained without communication, only to be released after significant public outcry. Among the abducted were Gabriel Oguda, Shad Khalif, and prominent social media activists behind the X pages Franje, Drey Mwangi, and Osama Otero.
