Tuesday morning protests in Kisumu were one of a kind in the region, marked by a rare sense of calm and solidarity, with no violent confrontations between police and demonstrators.
In a poignant act of remembrance, the protesters lit candles at a police roadblock, located a few meters from the Stage Lodge, to honor the youths who have lost their lives in recent protests across the country.
Gathered in significant numbers, the protesters knelt behind the roadblock, chanting anti-government slogans under the watchful eyes of the police, who remained unmoved and maintained a non-confrontational stance.
Throughout the protest, the demonstrators commemorated their slain counterparts, calling for justice and an end to the violence that has plagued the nation. Their chants reverberated with calls for accountability and an urgent demand for change.
The day began at Kondele grounds, where protesters assembled in a show of solidarity before marching towards the town center. Carrying placards bearing a variety of messages, they made their way along Jomo Kenyatta Highway and Oginga Odinga Streets, chanting slogans such as “Ruto Must Go,” a clear indication of their deep-seated disillusionment with the current administration.
Some of the youths who spoke to the media emphasized their commitment to maintaining a peaceful demonstration.
“We are here to honor those who have suffered and to call for justice in a peaceful manner. Violence only begets more violence, and we want to show that our cause is just and rooted in the desire for a better future.”
