Authorities are investigating the tragic death of Superintendent James Mugo Kabachia, the Kuria East Sub County Police Commander, who accidentally shot himself while handling a pistol at Kegonga police station on Monday evening.
The unfortunate incident occurred around 4 pm on July 1, when Superintendent Kabachia was receiving a pistol from the station’s armoury for his scheduled night duties.
According to police sources, he was conducting routine safety checks on the firearm when it unexpectedly discharged a bullet, striking him in the thigh.
The officer in charge of the armoury had issued Superintendent Kabachia a Beretta pistol loaded with 15 rounds of ammunition. As he proceeded with the customary safety checks to ensure the weapon’s secure handling, a single bullet was discharged, fatally injuring him. The bullet reportedly entered his right thigh and exited through his buttock, severing a vital vein.
Superintendent Kabachia was immediately rushed to Kegonga Sub County Hospital for emergency treatment. Due to the severity of his injury, he was later transferred to Migori County Hospital.
Despite the efforts of medical personnel, he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead upon arrival. The excessive bleeding from the injury is believed to have been the primary cause of his death.
The body of Superintendent Kabachia has been moved to the hospital’s mortuary, where it will undergo an autopsy.
