Chairman of East African Cables, Dr. M.G. Waweru passed away on Friday, July 5, 2024 at the age of 75.
Dr. Waweru had been at the helm of the EA Cables Board since his appointment in June 2017, leading the company for seven transformative years.
Dr. Waweru’s passing was announced in a heartfelt statement by TransCentury PLC chairperson, Shaka Kariuki, who paid tribute to his visionary leadership and dedication.
“Throughout his tenure, Dr. M.G. Waweru’s contributions were immeasurable, and his legacy will forever be etched in the history of our company and in our hearts. Under his leadership, East African Cables benefited from his immense experience, especially in strengthening systems and structures,” Mr. Kariuki remarked.
A prominent figure in both the public and private sectors, Dr. Waweru also served as the Commissioner General of the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) from 2003 to 2012. His tenure at KRA was marked by significant reforms and a notable increase in tax collections, earning him the prestigious Chief Order of the Burning Spear award from the late President Mwai Kibaki.
In addition to his role at EA Cables, Dr. Waweru was one of the founding members of TransCentury PLC and was instrumental in steering the company to success across various fields. His contributions were recognized in 2022 when KCA University awarded him an Honorary Doctorate for his outstanding service to both the public and private sectors.
