Government Spokesperson Isaac Mwaura has revealed that Kenya has incurred losses amounting to approximately Ksh6 billion due to ongoing protests across the country.
Speaking in his weekly address on Thursday, July 18, 2024, Mwaura warned of further economic decline if the protests continue in the coming weeks.
Citing data from the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA), Mwaura expressed concern over the potential long-term impact of prolonged protests on the economy.
He highlighted that the country faces challenges in implementing necessary austerity measures following the rejection of the Finance Bill 2024, which aimed to raise Ksh346 billion.
“In addition to financial losses, entrepreneurs have suffered significant setbacks due to weekly demonstrations, including looting, vandalism, and reduced sales,” Mwaura explained.
Addressing the youth, whom he identified as the primary participants in the protests, Mwaura appealed for an end to the demonstrations to prevent further economic downturn.
“To the protesters, I extend an apology on behalf of the government for any display of opulence by state officials that may have fueled discontent. The Kenya Kwanza administration is resolute in addressing issues raised during the demonstrations, including corruption,” Mwaura stated.
