On Thursday, August 8, 2024, Nairobi’s Central Business District (CBD) was rocked by intense Gen Z-led protests against the government, known as Nane Nane.
Amid the chaos, a video circulated online showing police officers using tear gas against journalists who were covering the demonstrations.
The footage reveals journalists scrambling for safety while capturing the scene, as gunshots are heard in the background.
In a particularly emotional response, journalist Stephen Letoo, visibly tearful, took to social media to condemn the police’s actions.
Letoo, who was among those attacked, criticized the police for targeting media personnel during the protests.
“The way the police have turned to harm journalists in the CBD today is absolutely unacceptable,” Letoo stated in his post.
Adding to the distressing reports, Cecilia Ngunjiri, a journalist also covering the Nane Nane protests, was reportedly injured by a police officer in Nairobi City.
Additionally, a guard operating along Kimathi Street was rushed to the hospital after being allegedly beaten by police officers for filming their actions while clearing the street.
The incident has raised serious concerns about the safety of journalists covering civil unrest and the treatment of media professionals in volatile situations.
