Businesswoman Nancy Kigunzu, aka ‘Mathee wa Ngara’, Arrested with Bhang by DCI Officers

Businesswoman Nancy Kigunzu, widely known as Mathee wa Ngara, was arrested on Friday morning by officers from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) at her apartment in Juja, Kiambu County.

The arrest was conducted by the Anti-Narcotics and Transnational Organized Crime units, who discovered an unspecified amount of bhang in her possession.

The arrest marks a significant development in Kigunzu’s ongoing legal troubles related to drug offenses.

According to a certain media, the investigations are still underway to determine the exact quantity and value of the drugs seized during the arrest.

Kigunzu’s recent apprehension follows a high-profile case from August 2023, when she was initially charged after a major drug bust at her residence in Ngara, Nairobi.

During that operation, police recovered Sh13.1 million in cash along with large quantities of bhang.

Although she was not immediately taken into custody, she later turned herself in at DCI headquarters on August 21, 2023.

Following her arrest, Kigunzu appeared in court where she applied for bail.

However, her request was denied on August 25, 2023, with the court ruling that she was a flight risk.

Consequently, the court ordered the Sh13.1 million seized from her residence to be transferred to the Central Bank of Kenya.

In April 2024, Justice Esther Maina ruled that the Sh13.1 million was to be forfeited to the State, declaring it as proceeds of crime in a case filed by the Assets Recovery Authority.

The forfeiture marked a significant legal setback for Kigunzu, who now faces additional narcotics charges in the ongoing investigation.
