Meru Governor Kawira Mwangaza was impeached for the third time by the Meru County Assembly on August 8, 2024.
The impeachment process was intense, with 49 out of 69 MCAs voting in favor of her removal.
This decision was fueled by allegations of abuse of office, gross misconduct, and constitutional violations, including her mishandling of county funds and failure to address ongoing issues like the medics’ strike.
In a bid to ensure they wouldn’t miss the critical impeachment vote, some MCAs reportedly chose to sleep overnight in the assembly building.
This unusual move highlighted the high stakes and tension surrounding the process.
The situation was further complicated by heightened security around the assembly, as there were concerns that hired goons might attempt to disrupt the proceedings by attacking the premises.
