Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja received a warm welcome at Toi Market on his latest visit following a catastrophic fire that destroyed their stalls and claimed four lives last week.
In a show of solidarity, Sakaja has donated 5,000 iron sheets to help the traders rebuild their businesses.
During a visit to the fire-ravaged market, Sakaja also announced a three-month waiver on daily market charges.
“Due to the fire loss, I have directed that you will not pay daily charges for three months to recover from the loss,” he stated.
In addition to the donation and fee waiver, Governor Sakaja revealed that the Nairobi County Government has allocated Sh100 million for the reconstruction of the market.
This fund will be used for building new stalls, erecting a perimeter wall around the market, and providing job opportunities for local youths involved in the construction.
“The construction of the perimeter wall and the market is expected to commence immediately. This will bring much-needed hope to the traders as they begin the process of rebuilding their businesses,” Sakaja said.
He emphasized his commitment to the traders and the community, stating, “I will personally support you to ensure that Toi Market is rebuilt and no one is displaced.”
Sakaja also reassured that despite facing challenges during previous visits, he remains dedicated to standing by the traders.
“Si mliona sikutoroka, hata wale walinipiga mawe, nilitoka pole pole kama Rambo, kwa sababu nyinyi ni watu wangu na lazima tusaidiane,” he added.
