Everine Karekia, a 31-year-old mother of four from Mugamba-ciura village, is in a dire situation after accidentally swallowing a needle four weeks ago.
Despite seeking help from Embu Level 5 Hospital and Kerugoya Level 4 Hospital, the needle remains lodged in her throat, causing her significant distress and prompting a desperate search for financial assistance.
Karekia, who has been breastfeeding her eight-month-old baby during this ordeal, recounted the incident that led to her predicament.
“While I was sewing my baby’s clothing, I placed the needle in my mouth for a moment, and it accidentally slipped down my throat.
Her husband, Kelvin Maina, has expressed grave concern over the situation. “This is the fourth week with the needle still in her throat,” Maina said.
“The hospitals are asking for Ksh 10,000 to trace and remove the needle, but we cannot afford it. We are struggling to feed our family, and my wife continues to suffer.”
The financial burden has been exacerbated by their inability to afford additional medical care.
After being referred from Kerugoya Hospital to a private facility, the family was unable to proceed due to prohibitive costs, leaving Karekia without the urgent medical intervention she needs.
The local community has initiated a fundraising campaign to support Karekia and her family.
Additionally, family’s financial struggles have prevented them from accessing necessary medical services.
