A heart-wrenching accident on the Nakuru-Nairobi Highway near Mbaruk in Gilgil on August 13, 2024, resulted in the tragic death of five family members from Samia, Funyula in Busia County.
The collision, involving a Mercedes saloon car and a lorry, occurred when the car, traveling from Gilgil towards Nakuru, attempted to overtake another vehicle and collided head-on with the lorry coming from the opposite direction.
The victims include Margaret Omondi, 32, her three children—Jayson Ambani, 4, and 6-month-old twins Ivan Milan Ambani and Ethan Milan Ambani—as well as their house help, Celestine Atamba, 20.
All five occupants of the Mercedes perished instantly in the crash.
Christopher Ambani, 35, the driver of the Mercedes and the sole survivor of the accident, sustained severe injuries.
He was initially taken to St. Joseph’s Hospital in Gilgil with multiple fractures and has since been referred to a Nairobi hospital for specialized treatment.
The family was en route to Kakamega County for the August holidays to visit their grandmother when the accident occurred.
The devastating impact of the crash has left the community in shock and mourning.
Authorities are investigating the circumstances surrounding the accident, and the road has since been cleared.
