One of the survivors from the tragic Nithi Bridge accident has come forward to share details about the driver’s mistake that led to the crash, which claimed twelve lives instantly.
The survivor explained that they were part of a group called Vision Group, and all twelve people who died, including children, were traveling together in the same public service vehicle from Meru to Kajiado.
While speaking to reporters at the hospital, the survivor recounted how their vehicle narrowly avoided disaster.
Their matatu (a type of minibus) was in the lead and nearly went off the road, but the driver managed to regain control just in time.
However, the situation turned fatal for the ten-seater vehicle behind them.
The survivor revealed that the driver of the ten-seater attempted to overtake their vehicle but lost control in the process, causing it to veer into the opposite lane.
This led to a head-on collision with a Hilux pickup truck traveling towards Meru.
The reckless overtaking maneuver was the critical mistake that resulted in the tragic loss of their friends’ lives.
The road where the accident occurred is notorious as one of the most dangerous blackspots, and the driver was reportedly unfamiliar with the area.
Among the victims was Anne Njeri and her one-year-old daughter.
A friend of Njeri told the media that Njeri had planned to attend a self-help group meeting in Meru and was supposed to return the next day. Tragically, she and her daughter lost their lives in the accident.
