The current state of hostels at the University of Nairobi (UoN), as seen in the image, is shocking and unacceptable.
Hall 2, located at the Main Campus, is in poor condition, despite students paying Ksh 21,000 per semester.
This situation raises serious concerns about the quality of services provided and reflects a significant failure by the university to take care of students’ living standards.
The hostel’s condition, from broken floors to worn-out bedding, shows clear neglect in maintenance and cleanliness.
Such an environment is harmful to students, affecting their health and overall well-being.

It’s troubling that an institution, which should prioritize the needs of students, is allowing such issues to persist without intervention.
This reflects a bigger problem with accountability, not only within the university but also within the current government.
It’s their responsibility to ensure that students live and learn in safe and comfortable spaces.
The poor state of these hostels highlights the leadership’s failure to fulfill this responsibility.
If the situation continues to be ignored, it will only lead to more frustration among students.
Urgent action is needed to improve these conditions, as they damage not only the university’s reputation but also the quality of higher education in the country.
It’s time for both the university and government to put students’ well-being first and provide the proper environment they deserve.
