Aisha Jumwa recently sparked controversy at the Chenda Chenda Festival in Kilifi, where she disrupted the cultural event, leading to clashes between her supporters and those of Kilifi Governor Gideon Mungaro.
Jumwa, the former Gender Cabinet Secretary, set up a parallel stage at the event and attempted to draw attention away from the main proceedings.
The festival, which celebrates local cultural traditions, had already been organized with a clear agenda, but Jumwa’s actions led to a tense standoff.
Her move escalated when she tried to persuade Trade and Industry Cabinet Secretary Salim Mvurya to join her at her dais. When Mvurya refused, the situation intensified, resulting in a public altercation and the dismantling of the event’s sound system.

The disruption angered many, including Governor Mungaro, who expressed his disappointment and urged political leaders to respect such cultural events, warning against the use of political influence to undermine others’ leadership
Coastal leaders also criticized Jumwa, accusing her of neglecting the local community during her time in government but now seeking recognition after being dismissed from the cabinet.
This incident is seen as politically charged, given the longstanding rivalry between Jumwa and Mungaro, who had both vied for the Kilifi gubernatorial seat in 2022.
