Several people were feared dead on Wednesday, September 11, 2024, after a horrific accident along the Mai Mahiu-Narok highway involving an LPG trailer, a 14-seater matatu, and a hearse.
The incident, which occurred around midday, saw the trailer lose control and collide with three vehicles, causing a massive pile-up.
Eyewitnesses reported that the LPG trailer struck the matatu from behind, sending it tumbling down the escarpment, where it overturned.
The hearse, which was transporting a deceased loved one from Nairobi to Rongo, rolled down the slope, leading to what bystanders described as a tragic double loss for the affected family.
A third vehicle, a tour van, was also hit, leaving its rear window shattered.
Images circulating on social media captured the aftermath of the accident, with the matatu lying on its side at the bottom of the cliff.
Preliminary reports from the Red Cross indicate that one person died on the spot, while another was critically injured and rushed to a nearby hospital.
Eleven others sustained minor injuries and were treated at the scene.
Good Samaritans and emergency responders quickly arrived to assist those trapped beneath the overturned matatu.
Their efforts, however, caused significant traffic congestion along the busy highway.
The Red Cross and local authorities are continuing rescue operations as police have yet to release an official statement regarding the cause of the accident.
Early reports suggest that the LPG truck’s brakes may have failed, leading to the catastrophic crash.
