Six students from Mumbuni Boys Secondary School in Machakos have been arrested following a fire that broke out in one of the dormitories on Thursday night.
According to Machakos County Police Commander Patrick Lobolia, a half-liter of petrol, suspected to have been used to start the fire, was recovered from the scene.
The suspects, who are in Form 3 and Form 4, were held overnight at Machakos police station but later returned to the school for the board of management to determine their fate.
“The fire broke out at exactly midnight, and the school’s administration quickly reported the incident to Machakos police station,” Lobolia said.
Officers responded promptly, securing the scene.
Teachers and students were already attempting to put out the blaze when officers arrived, and the fire brigade eventually joined them, successfully containing the fire before it spread further.
The dormitory, located at the far end of the school, housed 220 students from Forms 2 and 3.
Fortunately, no injuries were reported, though all the students were in the dormitories when the fire started.
This is the second incident of unrest at Mumbuni Boys Secondary School within a week.
Last week, students were sent home after rioting, which resulted in significant property damage, including smashed windows.
Police maintained a presence at the school throughout the night following the latest fire.
