Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua is currently facing an impeachment motion brought forward by Kibwezi West MP Mwengi Mutuse.
The motion, which has gathered support from 291 MPs, accuses Gachagua of a range of constitutional violations, corruption, and misconduct.
One of the major allegations is that Gachagua’s inflammatory remarks have divided Kenyans along ethnic lines, undermining national unity.
Additionally, he is accused of undermining President William Ruto by opposing certain government policies, including the Nairobi River Riparian Evacuation Order.
The charges against Gachagua also include claims of interfering with county governments, particularly in Nairobi, and engaging in corrupt practices, with accusations of amassing wealth illegally through proxies and family members.
His conduct is said to have negatively impacted public trust in government.
Despite the serious nature of these accusations, Gachagua appears unbothered.
His wife, Dorcas Rigathi, dismissed the impeachment efforts, suggesting that Gachagua’s position was divinely secured and that only prayers could remove him from office.
Gachagua himself has remained confident, implying that any such action would need to come from President Ruto.
This impeachment motion has deepened political tensions in Kenya, with debates now scheduled in Parliament.
Depending on the outcome, it could lead to significant political shifts within the Kenya Kwanza government.
